Clinical profile and management of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus

Study design- Observational, prospective study of one year duration
Purpose- To study the clinical profile and management of HZO and effect of treatment on course of disease. 
Methods- The study included 20 patients presenting with clinical features of HZO. Comprehensive ophthalmic evaluation including corneal evaluation was done. 
Results- Majority of patients 74% in our study belong to 51-60 years,70% were male,20% were diabetic,1 patient each had HIV infection and tuberculosis, ocular involvement was seen 80% patients. Vesicular skin lesions were seen in 95% patients. Corneal lesion was seen in 40% patients, anterior uveitis was seen in 10%. On follow up, post herpetic neuralgia was seen in 30% patients. Patients with epithelial keratitis were treated with topical acyclovir ointment, cycloplegics and lubricating eye drops. Systemic valaciclovir was also given.
Conclusions-  Early diagnosis and prompt treatment helps in preventing corneal complication and post herpetic neuralgia.
