Fundus as a Window: Evaluating Retinal Manifestations in Pregnancy-Induced Hypertension

Study Design: Hospital-based cross-sectional study

Purpose: To assess ocular changes in PIH and correlate with hypertension severity and gestational age.

Methods: 25 PIH patients underwent detailed eye exams, including fundus evaluation. Retinal findings were graded and analyzed against blood pressure, proteinuria, and gestation.

Results: Ocular changes were noted in 60%, mainly Grade 1 retinopathy (40%), arteriolar attenuation (32%), and AV crossing changes (8%). Retinal hemorrhages and CSCR were rare. Findings strongly correlated with higher BP and gestation >31 weeks (p < 0.001).Fundus findings significantly correlated with higher grades of systemic hypertension.

Conclusion: Ocular involvement reflects systemic disease severity in PIH. Fundus examination is a simple, valuable tool for prognosis and early intervention.
