Assessment of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Biomarkers as Visual Prognostic Factors in DME


Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between OCT biomarkers and visual acuity in patients with diabetic macular edema (DME).

Methods: This hospital-based study included ten diabetic patients over 40 years old with clinically significant macular edema. Comprehensive ocular examinations, fundus evaluations, and OCT imaging were performed. Assessed biomarkers included central subfield thickness, cube volume, hyperreflective foci, subfoveal neuroretinal detachment, and disorganization of inner retinal layers. Glycemic control was measured using HbA1c.

Results: Several OCT biomarkers showed significant correlation with visual acuity. Subfoveal neuroretinal detachment, disrupted outer retinal layers, and hyperreflective foci were linked to worse visual outcomes. Higher HbA1c levels were significantly associated with more severe macular edema.

Conclusion: OCT biomarkers are effective in predicting visual prognosis in DME and aid in clinical decision-making.
