A Clinical Study to Determine the Ophthalmic Manifestations in Newly Diagnosed Patients of Leukemia

Study Design: Cross-sectional study
Purpose: To evaluate ocular signs in newly diagnosed leukemia and correlate them with total leukocyte count (TLC).

Methods: 60 leukemia patients at MGMMC and MY Hospital, Indore were examined before chemotherapy. Ophthalmic evaluation included  slit-lamp, and indirect ophthalmoscopy. Hematological data were recorded.

Results: Of 60 patients (34 males, 26 females), 36 (60%) had ocular findings. Subtypes included AML (33.3%), CML (30.0%), CLL (23.3%), and ALL (13.3%). Ocular signs were more common in CML and AML. Posterior segment was most involved (58.3%), with retinal hemorrhages (46.7%) most frequent. Ocular findings were linked to high TLC and low hemoglobin (p < 0.05). Most affected patients were asymptomatic.

Conclusion: Ocular involvement is frequent in leukemia, often asymptomatic, and linked to hematologic abnormalities. Routine screening at diagnosis can detect early vision-threatening changes.
