"Lipid Profile as a Predictor of Hypertensive Retinopathy Severity"

Study Design: Cross-sectional observational study
Purpose: To correlate lipid abnormalities, age, sex, and obesity with hypertensive retinopathy severity, to enhance screening and management.
Methods: A study on 140 hypertensive patients (>40 years) was conducted, excluding patients with diabetes, high myopia, hazy media, pregnancy, glaucoma, CKD, anemia, or other retinal vascular disorders. Fundus examination graded hypertensive retinopathy and analyzed its association with lipid profile, obesity, and hypertension duration
Result: Elevated total cholesterol (>240 mg/dl), triglycerides (≥150 mg/dl), and LDL (>160 mg/dl) positively correlated with HR severity, while HDL levels showed no significant association. Hypertension duration and obesity significantly impacted HR severity
Conclusion: The study correlates lipid abnormalities to hypertensive retinopathy progression, stressing the need for regular lipid screening and fundus examination to prevent vision-threatening retinal changes.
