Ocular Surface and External Disease

Efficacy of Ipsilateral Focal SLET with Amniotic Membrane in Large Primary Nasal Pterygium

Study Design:Prospective interventional study
Purpose:To evaluate the efficacy and safety of ipsilateral focal SLET in large primary nasal pterygium
Methods:Study include 38 patients with primary nasal pterygium (>5 mm) underwent excision followed by ipsilateral focal SLET with amniotic membrane graft. Patients were followed for 12 months to assess symptom relief, recurrence, and complications
Results: Significant improvement in symptoms and ocular surface was noted from postoperative day 7. Most patients had relief from foreign body sensation, redness, watering and pain within first few weeks. Only one graft failure occurred due to poor compliance with post operative medication. Recurrence rate was low with good cosmetic outcomes
Conclusion:Ipsilateral focal-simple limbal epithelial transplantation is a safe and effective surgical
technique for the management of large primary nasal pterygium. It provides excellent ocular surface
restoration, symptomatic relief and low recurrence rates
