Diabetic Retinopathy & Medical retina
Title:Beyond Glycemic Control:Serum Homocysteine as biomarker of Diabetic Retinopathy Progression
Study design: A cross-sectional analytical study. Purpose: To evaluate the association between serum homocysteine levels and the presence and severity of Diabetic Retinopathy, and assess its role as a biomarker for disease progression. Methods: Patients with diabetes mellitus were categorized into no retinopathy, NPDR, and PDR groups. All underwent detailed ophthalmic evaluation, and fasting serum homocysteine levels were measured. Statistical analysis assessed association with disease severity. Results: Serum homocysteine levels showed a significant, progressive increase with worsening retinopathy (p < 0.05), with highest levels in proliferative disease. Conclusion: Serum homocysteine is a promising biomarker for predicting risk, monitoring progression, and guiding management of diabetic retinopathy.
