Cornea

Evaluation of Donor Corneal Endothelial Cell Characteristics using eye bank specular microscopy EBSM

Purpose: To assess donor corneal endothelial viability & morphology using EBSM.
Methods: Cross sectional observational Study of 100 corneas from 50 donors processed at MGM Eye Bank, Indore. The studied parameters were ECD, CV &hexagonality. These were correlated to age, sex, cause of death, and time since death of the donor
Result: The study sample was composed of 66 male donors. it was observed that males had a higher mean ECD (1666 ± 380 cells/mm²). The average ECD of the cornea was high in young donor 2321± 431 cells/mm².Corneas of donors retrieved within 3 hours had higher ECD (1927 ± 612 cells/mm²). RTA donors has elevated ECD, likely due to younger age donor. CV and hexagonality did not show any significant variation
Conclusion:Donor age and retrieval time affect endothelial cell density. Better endothelial quality is associated with early retrieval and younger donor age. EBSM is useful for accurate tissue grading and improving graft utilization, which enhances transplant outcome.
