Retinal Neurodegeneration in Diabetes: Insights from RNFL Thickness Measurement via OCT

Study Design:
Hospital-based cross-sectional comparative study.

Purpose:
To evaluate and compare peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and age- and sex-matched healthy controls using Optical Coherence Tomography.

Methods:
This cross-sectional observational study included 100 participants (50 diabetics and 50 controls) aged ≥18 years. Patients diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus were compared with healthy individuals matched for age and sex. Peripapillary RNFL thickness was measured using spectral-domain OCT.

Results:
The mean peripapillary RNFL thickness was significantly lower in diabetic patients (92.3 ± 7.6 µm) compared to controls (99.1 ± 6.9 µm) (p < 0.001). 

 An RNFL cut-off value of ≤95 µm demonstrated a sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 70%

Conclusion:
Peripapillary RNFL thickness is significantly reduced in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus compared to healthy individuals.
