Assessment of awareness and knowledge of diabetic retinopathy among diabetics- A Clinical Survey

study design: hospital based cross sectional study
Purpose: To assess awareness and knowledge of diabetic retinopathy (DR) among patients with diabetes mellitus attending a hospital in Northern Telangana.

Methods: A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 300 diabetic patients using a pre-tested, interviewer-administered semi-structured questionnaire. Demographic data and awareness of DR, its prevention, screening, and treatment were recorded.

Results: Of 300 participants, 53.3% were males and 46.7% females (mean age: 48±10 years). Only 136 (45.3%) were aware of DR, with higher awareness among men (52.4%) than women (31.4%). Good glycemic control was recognized by 68% as preventive, while 74.7% were unaware of treatment options. Only 14.5% had undergone fundus examination.

Conclusion: Awareness and knowledge of DR was poor, and retinal screening uptake was low. Patient education and regular screening are essential for early detection and prevention of vision loss.
