Recent Advances in the Management of Diabetic Retinopathy: From Laser Therapy to Precision Medicine
Background: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of preventable blindness. Recent advances have improved its diagnosis and treatment. Objective: To review recent advances in the management of DR and diabetic macular edema. Methods: A narrative review of recent clinical trials, guidelines, and peer-reviewed literature was conducted. Results: Anti-VEGF therapy remains the mainstay for diabetic macular edema. Faricimab provides longer treatment durability. OCT angiography, ultra-widefield imaging, and AI-based screening have improved early detection and monitoring. Sustained drug delivery systems and novel therapies may reduce treatment burden. Conclusion: Advances in imaging, pharmacotherapy, and AI are improving outcomes and enabling more personalized management of diabetic retinopathy.
