Managing Acute Conjunctivitis: Insights From Indian Ophthalmologists

Purpose: To assess empirical treatment preferences and factors influencing brand selection for acute conjunctivitis among ophthalmologists in India.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 171 ophthalmologists across India was conducted in July 2024 using a structured questionnaire. Prescribing preferences and brand-selection drivers were analyzed descriptively.
Results: Moxifloxacin was the preferred first-line treatment (62%). In cases with significant inflammation, 46% used a moxifloxacin–loteprednol combination. In pediatric conjunctivitis, moxifloxacin and tobramycin were prescribed with similar frequency (35–40%). During outbreaks, MOXICIP was the preferred brand for 84% of respondents. Product quality (71%), efficacy (59%), and availability (46%) were the key drivers of brand choice.
Conclusions: Moxifloxacin is the preferred empirical therapy for acute conjunctivitis in India. Prescribing decisions are primarily influenced by product quality, efficacy, and availability.
